The Power of Food Self-Discipline

When it comes to our relationship with food, most of us could stand to be a little more self-disciplined. Whether we're trying to lose weight, eat healthier, or save money, food self-discipline is a powerful tool that can help us achieve our goals. But what exactly is food self-discipline?

Put simply, it's making mindful choices about what we eat and drink, and sticking to those choices even when temptation strikes. It's about being aware of our triggers and learning how to control our impulses. And it's not as difficult as it might sound. With a little practice, anybody can learn to be more self-disciplined when it comes to food.

3 Tips for Developing Food Self-Discipline

1. Be aware of your triggers.

The first step to becoming more self-disciplined around food is to become aware of your triggers—the things that lead you to make less-than-healthy choices. Maybe it's stress, boredom, or fatigue. Maybe it's seeing certain foods or being around certain people. Whatever your triggers may be, take some time to identify them so you can be prepared the next time they come up.

2. Have a plan.

Once you know your triggers, you can develop a plan for how to handle them in a way that doesn't involve overeating or eating unhealthy foods. If you know you're likely to eat mindlessly in front of the TV, for example, commit to only eating at the kitchen table. If you know you're likely to indulge when you're out with friends, have a game plan for how you'll order or what you'll order ahead of time. Having a plan takes the guesswork out of decision-making in the moment and helps you stay on track even when temptation strikes.

3. Practice self-compassion.

If you do find yourself succumbing to temptation from time to time, don't beat yourself up about it—practice self-compassion instead. Recognize that everyone slips up now and again and that the important thing is getting back on track as soon as possible. Remember, developing food self-discipline is a process, not a destination. The more patient and gentle you are with yourself along the way, the more likely you are to succeed in the end.

Food self-discipline is not an all-or-nothing proposition—it's a process that requires baby steps and lots of practice. But if you're looking for a way to improve your relationship with food, developing greater self-discipline is definitely a step in the right direction! Try implementing some of the tips above and see how they work for you.
